Yoga and Sexual Functioning

by Suzie Heumann

Yoga practice dramatically enhances sexual intimacy by increasing flexibility, body awareness, and concentration and focus during sex. Being able to move into new positions helps a woman discover subtle nuances that promote her own orgasmic capabilities. This is particularly important when she is exploring vaginal or G-spot orgasms. A subtle shift in the angle of penetration can make a dramatic difference in orgasmic turn-on.

Increased body awareness, both outer and inner, comes with the territory when practicing yoga. Using the mind to understand, watch, push a stretch, focus, and relax into the asanas (Sanskrit for "positions" in yoga) brings both an understanding of what our bodies are capable of and what our minds tell us we can or can't do. The breathing practices that accompany yoga practice heighten the awareness process and naturally arise when we are in lovemaking situations.

Yoga is a form of active meditation. As with meditation, the mindful focus cultivated during yogic activities brings a sense of awareness to other areas in our lives. Yogis begin to simply want a more real life experience. This translates into the bedroom by promoting deep connection, better intimacy, and eyes-wide-open sex.

Taken a step further, the bandas, or root lock practices, in yoga are very similar to Kegel exercises. These promote expanded health in the pelvic region, more blood flow, increased sensations in the vagina, awareness of the pelvic region, a tighter fit for your lover, and a much greater capacity for explosive orgasms.

Learning to bring the combined awareness of the body and mind that is created during yoga practice into sex activates a feedback loop that allows the person to begin expanding their capacity for orgasmic pleasure.

Coming from a yoga class and jumping right into bed could possibly make for the best sex you have ever had. Warmed up, flexible, energy channels open, and with your mind in focused relaxation describes a body ready for optimum experience. Yoga massages both internal organs and deep body tissue. The lymphatic and nervous systems are renewed and primed as is body awareness and mind clarity. A tuned mind and body promotes the neural connections needed for deep orgasmic experience. The greatest contribution to over-the-top orgasms is a sharp mind focused on a healthy bodily response. The feedback loop created when these two functions are moving in optimum tuning with each other leads to an ever increasing capacity to not only orgasm but to move into the arena of multi orgasmic response.

The yogic Yab/Yum position is based on both lovers being in the lotus position with the woman sitting on the man, facing him with her legs wrapped around his waist. This is a supremely Tantric yoga position. It aligns the chakras of both upright bodies and is a very awake position. Deep thrusting, slow, easy movement, eye contact, and embracing of the partner are hallmarks of this position.

Any position that allows for creative movement of both partners, facilitates movement of the sexual energy throughout the bodies, can be sustained for a few minutes like a yoga asana would be held, and creates an opportunity for the lovers to meditate or do PC muscle sexercises together, can be considered a yoga asana.
